my favourite open source applications for Windows

Using Windows as a free software enthusiast is isn’t always easy but often people don’t have a real choice and nothing can be done. But that doesn’t mean you have to abandon free software altogether salving one’s conscience. I’ll leave Firefox out of the List. Continue reading

Fast, Faster, Webkit Nightlies

What comes in mind when you think about Webkit? Apple, Open Source, KHTML, Safari, Chrome, SPEED

As a friend urged me to give the Webkit nightlies a try I was first hesitating not wanting to install another Browser let alone Apple’s not-so-cool update application, which tries to get every single on of their products on your machine, well that’s another story. In the end, as I was bored as usual I gave it a try anyway and I would not be disappointed. Continue reading

CodeWeavers does a proof-of-concept port of Chromium

As Lifehacker is reporting CodeWeavers ported Chromium, the OpenSource project behind Google Chrome to Mac and Linux. I’m not too surprised as it was already known to run in Wine and I’ve know idea why CrossOver as a tweaked, proprietary version of Wine shouldn’t be able to run it as well. They probably just ported it for the sake of it. Continue reading

VLC 0.9.2 released

The waiting time is over VLC 0.9.2 featuring the new QT4 interface is ready for prime time.

Besides finally getting rid of the wxwidgets interface, it offers many improvements in terms of usability: The settings got a complete overhaul and *nix and Win users got full screen controls, a feature until now only available on mac. For those who are using it to play music if now offers cover discovery and last.fm scrobbling, the playlist now features some sort of very minimalistic media library and an option to add podcasts which I’m not sure about how to use,  but as I probably won’t use it for listening to podcasts anyway I didn’t pay much attention.

All in all it now looks a lot friendlier in it’s new shape and with new tangoesque icons. The next days will show how well it performs and how stable it runs.

Grab it while it’s hot at http://www.videolan.org/vlc

For those of you who don’t want to compile from source I found someone with debs and a repository. Remember to be cautious using third party repositories.

Create FLVs with Mencoder on Windows

Putting videos on your website or on your blog can become pretty annoying as some people don’t have one particular player, this one particular codec or this particular browser.

What most people have though, is flash. If you make videos and want people to be actually able to play them on your website without having to download them, flash is the way to go. Continue reading

InfraRecorder, free open source CD/DVD burning solution for Windows

Today I will introduce a new category and new series to my blog – foss4win, free open source software for Windows.

The first application I will write about is InfraRecorder (GPLv2), a CD/DVD burning solution for Windows, I’m actually using myself for quite a while now. I don’t have money to waste to get one of those totally bloated burning suits like Nero or Roxio. I prefer free software where ever I can and was looking for an application to burn CDs.

Lanshark, P2P for local area networks

I’ve been to quite a bit of small to mid sized LAN-parties, and every time, really every time the biggest issues we had have been issues with sharing data.

Different kinds of WinXP editions, Vista and even Linux had but did not want to work together when it came to sharing. Which caused a huge problem at one event when we had no internet connection and synchronising patches, point releases would have been almost impossible. Continue reading
